In a typical dentist setting, getting a dental crown often takes multiple visits in order to evaluate the tooth and perform the procedure. At Andover Smiles, we offer a fast, innovative technique called the CEREC 3D® that completes the entire procedure – from evaluation to placement – in one visit.
What is the CEREC 3D® ?
A camera, computer and milling machine all in one, the CEREC 3D® utilizes computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology to repair weak or damaged teeth in one sitting.
The tooth being treated is first coated in a reflective powder directly onto the surface. Using a special camera, an optical impression of the tooth is then taken and transferred onto a computer screen. From there, Dr. Rinaldi will evaluate the tooth and design the crown.
After the crown has been made in the computer, the CAM technology automatically takes over using a disk and high-speed diamond bur to mill the crown out of a solid block of ceramic material. Once the new crown is finished, Dr. Rinaldi will adhere it to the surface of the damaged tooth.
In addition to taking just one visit to complete the process, the CEREC 3D® technique is also fast, usually taking no more than an hour from start to finish. Doctor Rinaldi is among only 4 percent of dentists across the country taking advantage of this useful, pioneering technology.
CEREC 3D® technology has been in use for more than 30 years, and its clinical safety has been proven with more than 250 scientific studies. More than 30 million tooth restorations have been done with CEREC® worldwide, with new algorithms and features added to increase accuracy and results.
What’s the Difference?
Whereas traditional crown types such as stainless steel, porcelain fused to metal and all-resin may be a cheaper treatment, they can also cause damage to opposing teeth and fracture over time, adding additional visits and further dental work. The ceramic milled crowns of the CEREC 3D® machine require no temporary crowns, no second visits and are built to last over the long term.
Doctor Rinaldi will inform you during your appointment of any aftercare that is necessary for your new crown as well as any minor side effects you may experience. Since no metals are used in the manufacturing of theses crowns, the risk of allergic reaction is significantly reduced.
